AI-Ready Infrastructure in Northern Malaysia:Building the Cross-Border Future

The geographical landscape of ASEAN’s digital economy is shifting rapidly. As hyperscale investments pour into the region, Northern Malaysia is steadily emerging as a critical nexus for regional digital infrastructure, presenting new opportunities for cross-border expansion.

Recent research from McKinsey indicates that the Asia-Pacific region could account for approximately 34% of global data centre demand. Furthermore, Moody’s projects that data centre capacity across South and Southeast Asia will grow at a 24% CAGR over the next four to five years. This unprecedented demand for cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure is placing immense pressure on mature, traditional telecommunications corridors. As a result, digital traffic and cross-border workloads are actively expanding beyond saturated hubs to find scalable, power-advantaged environments.

For enterprise infrastructure leaders and cloud providers, this regional shift presents a distinct operational challenge. Organisations require reliable, low-latency routes that seamlessly support Malaysia-Thailand connectivity and broader ASEAN reach. Relying exclusively on congested legacy hubs creates unacceptable risks, including single points of failure, latency delays and restricted access to vital power resources. Buyers need modern, geographically diverse locations that can handle the extreme power densities of AI hardware while providing direct, resilient pathways into Indochina.

To resolve these constraints, infrastructure decision-makers must evaluate facilities that offer a strategic combination of high-capacity power, advanced cooling capabilities and premium network interconnection. AI-ready facilities must be capable of supporting high-density workloads without compromising on security or sustainability. Simultaneously, these facilities must act as active terrestrial bridges, linking robust subsea cable networks in the south to the rapidly digitising markets in the north.

Connecting the Malaysia-Thailand Digital Corridor

Located in the Delapan Special Border Economic Zone, Open DC’s D8-1 facility provides a purpose-built solution for these exact operational requirements. D8-1 is a TIA-942 Rated 3 data centre that serves as a premier gateway for
cross-border digital innovation at the heart of the Malaysia-Thailand telecommunications corridor.

The facility is engineered specifically as an AI-ready infrastructure platform. Spanning 47,000 square feet in its first phase, D8-1 delivers an upgradeable power capacity of up to 20MW and supports high-density rack configurations of up to 18kW. This robust technical foundation ensures that carriers, hyperscalers and AI platforms can scale their most demanding workloads reliably and sustainably.

Beyond processing power, D8-1 offers unparalleled regional reach. It is home to the DE-CIX Internet Exchange, providing premium peering and ultra-low latency access directly at the border. Furthermore, the facility is strategically located less than 120 kilometres from four key cable landing stations that host 16 submarine cables. Supported by dedicated dark fibre routes connecting directly to the Thailand border, D8-1 enables unlimited bandwidth scalability and resilient, high-speed regional content delivery.

As the ASEAN digital economy scales, securing resilient and scalable infrastructure is no longer optional. Organisations must leverage strategic geographic gateways to optimise their regional connectivity and prepare for the demands of high-performance computing.
