Open DC Featured in The Edge Malaysia: Championing a Layered Approach to Data Centre Sustainability

This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly from June 15, 2026 to June 21, 2026, by journalist Danial Dzulkifly, and was later published online on June 18, 2026.

Danial Dzulkifly and the editorial team at The Edge Malaysia shed light on a critical truth within our industry: sustainable data centres are not built overnight on a single “silver bullet” technology. Instead, true environmental progress is the result of continuous, incremental innovations.

Here is a closer look at our philosophy and the key takeaways from our feature in the publication.

The Myth of the Silver Bullet

The myth of the silver bullet in data centre sustainability

As our Managing Director, Wong Weng Yew, shared with The Edge, the data centre sector must move past waiting for one massive breakthrough to solve our energy and water challenges.

At Open DC, our working consensus is built on accumulating minor breakthroughs. When combined, incremental changes such as water reclamation and advanced liquid cooling create a highly significant impact on our Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and overall environmental footprint.

Our Evolution in Cooling Technology

Open DC evolution in cooling technology

Cooling remains one of the most resource-intensive aspects of data centre management. The article perfectly captured our structured transition over the years to keep up with both rising technological demands, such as AI workloads, and environmental responsibilities.

Our technological journey includes:

  • 2015 Foundations: Using standard air-cooling units for our early data halls.
  • Intermediate Upgrades: Transitioning to chilled water and fan-wall cooling, which currently anchor most of our facilities.
  • Direct-to-Chip Liquid Cooling: Piping coolant directly into racks and circulating it through heat sinks. By the end of this year, more than 70% of our capacity will be cooled using this advanced technology.
  • Zero-Water Eco-Chillers: Exploring closed-loop systems that reject heat without evaporative water use, ensuring we are prepared for a future where water resources become increasingly scarce.

Futureproofing for Malaysia’s Digital Economy

The exploding demand for AI requires data centres to operate at higher rack densities than ever before. However, futureproofing our infrastructure does not mean constantly tearing down what was built just a few years ago.

As highlighted in the piece, future-proofing is about enabling a structured transition. As a 100% Malaysian-owned operator with six facilities across the country, including our upcoming hub at the Kedah-Thailand border, Open DC is committed to scaling responsibly.

We are constantly evaluating marginal PUE improvements against practical deployment to ensure our clients get the most efficient, reliable, and sustainable service possible.

We highly encourage our partners, clients, and industry peers to read Danial Dzulkifly’s comprehensive article to understand how operators and vendors across Malaysia are collaborating to build a greener digital backbone.
